Good to know

Embassy or consulate? An embassy handles diplomatic relations between two countries and usually sits in the capital, Rome. A consulate (or consular section) looks after citizens' practical needs — passports, visas, documents, registrations and help in difficulty. For a lost passport or urgent assistance, contact the consular section.

In an emergency, call 112 first — the EU-wide emergency number, answered in English — then reach your consulate. Opening hours and appointment rules vary from one country to another, so it's always best to check the embassy's official website before going in person.
