History and Origins of Letino
The first documented records of Letino date back to the 10th century, when its territory was included in the County of Benevento. However, the area boasts much older human activity, with evidence of Samnite settlements that exploited the strategic position and water resources of the area. The name itself, according to some interpretations, might derive from the Latin “Laetum”, meaning fertile, indicating the agricultural and pastoral productivity of its mountain pastures.
During the Middle Ages, Letino took on the role of a fortified outpost. The construction of a castle, of which some remains exist today, attests to the military importance of the site, positioned to control transit routes between the valleys.
