The river Ancinale runs through the valley below, marking the boundary between Brognaturo and the neighbouring settlement of Spadola, while the village connects to the wider road network via the SS 713 dir leading to Serra San Bruno.

Brognaturo is a mountain village in the province of Vibo Valentia whose earliest documented records date to the sixteenth century, making it a settlement of modest but traceable historical depth on the eastern slopes of the Serre range.

A pivotal moment in the community’s collective memory came on 5 February 1721, when restoration work on a local church uncovered a painted image of the Madonna and Child on one of its walls. The figure became known as the Madonna della Consolazione, and local tradition credits her with protecting the village during the destructive earthquake of 1783 and again during the severe flooding of 1935. On 7 October 1993 the church was formally elevated to the status of a sanctuary.

The village’s identity is also reflected in its civic symbols: the brogna, a conch shell historically blown by shepherds to call their flocks, shares a phonetic closeness with the place name itself, and the municipal standard is a white cloth trimmed with blue.

The church was formally raised to the rank of sanctuary on 7 October 1993. The Madonna is honoured twice a year: on 5 February and on the first Sunday of September.

The village itself is better known for a craft tradition than a gastronomic one: local woodworkers have long practised the art of carving pipes, a skill that remains among the most distinctive activities associated with Brognaturo. Liqueurs based on herbs, liquorice, bergamot, and citrus are part of the broader regional tradition that visitors to this corner of Calabria may encounter.

Wines carrying the Calabria IGT designation are produced across the wider region, alongside DOC labels such as Bivongi and Savuto, both geographically relevant to this inland mountain area.
